Physician’s Formula The Healthy Lip Velvet Finish “Berry Healthy” | Review

Hello friends!

I was unbelievably lucky and found a bunch of these Healthy Lips on clearance at Walmart – I couldn’t help but snag some because I’ve heard people rave about them.  Spoiler alert: for good reason, too!

Color: Berry Healthy is a neutral, deep pink that leans slightly cool, but could mostly be considered a neutral pink-berry.  The neutral-ness of the shade tends to make it look less berry than what one would traditionally think – there’s very little purple in it. I personally would consider this a pink nude in my own collection.

Finish: As most liquid lipsticks do, this formula dries down to a matte finish.  The packaging states that this is a velvet finish, but to me there isn’t much shine, and what little there is definitely goes away as the product wears.

Packaging: The packaging on this lipstick is definitely unique to other liquid lipstick tubes! It’s square and acrylic with the silver cap.  This definitely feels weighty and more luxurious than a typical drugstore liquid lipstick.  The only complaint I have is that it’s unnecessarily bulky – there easily could have been less acrylic on the outside of the product and still kept the aesthetic.

Applicator: I adore the teardrop applicator with a well on the inside. The shape lends well to application – it’s easy to get a crisp line with the pointed tip.  The well ensures that you don’t have to dip into the tube a second time as it holds enough product for both lips.

Application: I found application of this to be strange at first, until I got more comfortable with the formula.  It’s not actually fully opaque; it’s semi-opaque, but with this particular shade that actually worked in its favor.  The product is thicker than you would expect – not a mousse, but also not thin like a standard liquid lipstick.

There were some issues with evenness on application, especially on the edges of my lips.  You could definitely tell that some spots were more pigmented than others, however it was incredibly easy to just use my finger and dot off the excess.

Transfer: In the first half hour to hour of wear, this lipstick has a problem with a lot of transfer. It doesn’t really dry down fully, so a lot of the transfer is just excess product coming off.  I’ve found that even with the amount of transfer, it doesn’t really affect the appearance.  After the initial transfer of product, which can easily be remedied by blotting right away, I find that there is very little transfer.  It dries to a stain like finish and tends to keep that appearance until you take it off or a significant amount of time has passed.

Fading: The fading of this lipstick is pretty minimal, which I find surprising.  It’s not an especially bold color for me with my pigmented lips, but it’s definitely still a berry shade.  I found that it faded very gracefully and never left a weird ring of color on the outside of my lips after I ate.

If I ate a particularly messy meal, I’d put wear time at around 5-6 hours.  If it’s a standard day with non-messy meals, it would make it through around 8 hours. By the end of that time it definitely looks more worn, but still intact enough to not need to be touched up if I didn’t want to.

Comfort: This is absolutely one of the most comfortable liquid lipsticks I’ve tried to date.  The thinness with which it goes on means that it feels like nothing on the lips, but the mousse texture of the formula lends to a very comfortable feeling instead of drying like a standard thin liquid lipstick.  It feels a bit like silicone in terms of the softness with which it applies.

Overall: The easiest way to describe this formula is like the texture and comfort of a mousse liquid lipstick, with the thin feeling of a lip stain.  It’s so difficult to explain, but I really enjoy the way they feel. If you’ve tried the Tarte Sugar Rush liquid lipsticks, I’d say it’s very comparable.

I wasn’t in love with it the first few times I’d tried this out, but as I learned the formula more and played with it, I really learned to appreciate it.  It’s so comfortable and something that I don’t feel like I need to babysit, meaning I’d be happy to put this on at the beginning of my work day and not have to worry about it. I cannot wait to try some of the other colors and see if I have a similar experience, especially now that I understand how this formula works!

Price Point: The Healthy Lips are $8.49 – I think that this is a fabulous price, especially if you can find them on sale or use a coupon!  You can find them at Physicians Formula’s direct website, Ulta, Amazon, and most drugstores.

Have you tried this formula before?
