I have a habit of buying lipsticks from Marshall’s on the regular, and I thought that this was a really beautiful color to try! When this formula first launched, I heard a lot of buzz about how nice these were, so I wanted to test it for myself!
Color: Hemp is a pale peachy nude with a pink undertone. In some lighting it looks more nude, and in others it pulled very orange; almost coral. I would still consider this a bright peach nude though!
Finish: After first being applied it has a demi-matte appearance, but it did end up drying down to a very flat matte like a traditional liquid lipstick.
Packaging: I think the packaging of this is really beautiful! It has a black cap and stripe, with a tube that fades from frosted to clear.
Applicator: The applicator of this is a long, flat and rounded tip doefoot that works well to gather enough product for application.
Application: Application of this lip product is quite nice due to the soft, moussey formula. It smoothed over my lips easily and the shape of the applicator made getting straight lines simple to do.
This lipstick has a strong chocolatey smell when applying, and the scent definitely lingered for at least an hour after wearing it. To me, I got a bit of a kit-kat vibe from it!
I found that this particular shade did need to be built up quite a bit to be mostly opaque on my lips, and I wasn’t able to get full color; there was always a bit of my natural lip color poking through. On the bright side, it did go over itself very nicely and did not feel any heavier with more layers.
Something to note is that if you have perpetually dry lips I would recommend a lip scrub and lip balm to help prep your lips – it did emphasize my dry spots. It also had just the slightest bit of a textured appearance when applied, which I’m assuming comes from the very moussey formula being thicker than a thin, watery matte liquid lip. It never felt sticky.
Transfer: Despite the fact that this lipstick dries down matte, it has an insane amount of transfer. It doesn’t seem to set itself when it dries, so I started immediately getting transfer when taking drinks, eating, etc. It deposited a lot of color to my chin while eating, which is such a frustrating thing when you’re with other people!
I noticed that the more it transferred, the more the color migrated into my deeper lip lines, so they were emphasized by a nudey-orange color that looked really strange.
Fading: Something that I had never experienced until this lipstick was the really odd fading. After eating or drinking or just natural wear, it ended up giving me just a bit of a grey cast, which happens a lot with these paler colors on me.
What I thought was strange was the hot orange/pink color that would end up appearing around 5-6 hours after application! Usually by that point the lipstick was pretty faded, so maybe it was just the pink pigment in the lipstick that had stained while the more nude pigments disappeared? I’m not a makeup chemist so I don’t know how that works, but it’s my best guess!
Comfort: Even though there were transfer and fading issues, I thought that this lipstick remained extremely comfortable. It applies feeling soft and moussey but not heavy, and even after wearing for a few hours it never really feels any different like some liquid lipsticks do. It’s also not as heavy as some cream lipsticks either, so it’s a pretty cool blend of comfort and weightlessness.
Overall: I enjoy how comfortable this formula is, but honestly it’s not what I look for when I go for a liquid lipstick. I’m not sure if it’s just the fact that the color doesn’t work on me and so it makes the formula perform worse than normal, but I was disappointed. The wear was poor and I was definitely unhappy with how my lips looked, even after just drinking from my water bottle.
If you’re looking for an incredibly comfortable lipstick and don’t mind regularly reapplying/touching up, I think you’ll have a much better time with this. Additionally, if your lips aren’t quite as pigmented as mine are this color would probably look a lot nicer on you.
Price point: This particular formula is $19 each if purchasing from Sephora, Ulta, or BareMinerals. I found this color at Marshall’s, so I ended up paying $7.99, which is quite the discount!
Where you can purchase: Unfortunately I’m not sure that you can buy this particular shade from traditional stores anymore as I couldn’t find it anywhere! I picked this up in Marshall’s sometime this year, and I’m almost positive I’ve seen it recently. If you really love this color, I’d recommend stopping by your local discount store and looking!
