Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick “Ashton” | Review

One brand that comes to mind as the pioneer of the matte liquid lipstick trend is Anastasia Beverly Hills! Way back in the day when liquid lipsticks were just becoming a thing, this was one of the original formulas you could find.  Today I wanted to share with you whether I feel like they’ve stood the test of time, or have fallen flat compared to other formulas!

Color: Ashton is described as a “midtone yellow-brown”.  While I find this color really pretty, if you don’t love browns you probably want to skip on this and go for a different color instead.  The yellow undertone might be something that doesn’t work well with other skin tones, so this is definitely a color I’d suggest swatching first!

Packaging: I love how sleek the packaging looks!  The silver tube has ABH’s symbol on the top in black, so it matches the tube and makes it easy to identify among other liquid lipsticks.  I also really enjoy the gold detailing on the top of the tube as well!

Applicator: The applicator is long and flat and picks up quite a bit of product!  I was able to cover my entire bottom lip with one swipe and pushed my lips together to cover my top lip and then got my cupid’s bow as well.  You can see there’s a rounded tip, so it’s hard to get a crisp line for the edge of my lips.

Application: I wanted to see if prepping your lips made a difference in the appearance of this lipstick, and unsurprisingly it definitely does help!  To get a good comparison, I put it on without any prep the first day, and the second day I did a pretty intensive routine.

I started by putting some chapstick on the night before, and then the next morning as well. I left it on for around 10 minutes before then using a lip scrub and wiping it all off with a wash cloth.  My lips felt both a little bit sore (because of the roughness of the scrub and cloth) but also incredibly soft and smooth.  I would definitely suggest doing the same if you’re someone who has dry lips or struggles with liquid lipsticks making you look really dry and cracked.

Transfer: This lipstick is mostly transfer proof, but I noticed that as the day went on my natural oils had made the outside of the liquid lipstick transfer when I kissed the back of my hand.  This was after about 6 hours of wear, so it’s not surprising that at that point it would start to break down.  It didn’t come off much while eating or drinking coffee, which is definitely a plus!

Fading: The fading on this lipstick isn’t terrible by any means, but because it’s a bolder nude you can definitely tell when it starts to disappear.  Thankfully, it fades very evenly and doesn’t leave a weird ring of color on the outside of your lips.

Comfort: In terms of comfort, I personally thought that this was a very comfortable for a liquid lipstick.  It definitely was better after I used chapstick and a lip scrub, but even on the days when I put this on straight away I still didn’t have any major problems with my lips feeling dry.  After around 5 hours they did start to look my dry and lined, but I’m not surprised by that in the slightest.

Overall, I had a really wonderful experience!  It was comfortable and looked extremely flattering. The fade wasn’t an issue at all, and the lack of transferring definitely gave me confidence to wear it out in public.

If you’re interested in purchasing this color, you can find it at Sephora, Ulta, and the brand’s website.  It’s $20, which is a bit expensive, but not really that bad compared to other Sephora brands.  I’d say it’s very midrange!  It’s absolutely worth the price in my opinion, and if you’re on a budget, you can wait until the 20% off sale at Sephora or Ulta, plus sometimes ABH has sales on their products as well.  If you enjoy this color, I would highly recommend you pick it up.
